2016 in Review – by The Digital Insurer

​2016 has been a year of tremendous growth for digital insurance around the world. We have seen an explosion of new startups as well as programmes by insurers and reinsurers looking to accelerate digital strategies and incorporate new technologies.​​​​​​​

​The one prediction nobody made last Christmas was the extent to which InsurTech would take off in 2016.  I remember very few from a year ago and now, there seems to be a new list published every day! As they say, InsurTech is the new FinTech (well, at least for the rest of 2017 before this bubble starts to deflate ​​​​). Here are my top 10 predictions for 2017.​​​​​​​

We are in early stage planning to have our second Asia conference in Singapore in 2017 and hopefully our first European conference in London. Space will be limited and we will issue pre-registration options well ahead of time as well as sponsor information for potential tech partners. We also plan to have Startup InsurTech and Insurance Innovation awards at both events. More information coming soon.

The Team @ The Digital Insurer  is growing


We have grown to a team of more than 10 who are doing a fantastic job delivering content and services to our community. Thank you team – it is a pleasure working with each and everyone of you.

We also have now more than 20 volunteer News Correspondents who are helping us to get faster and deeper news and insights around the world and their dedication is much appreciated.

I am also really pleased to announce two new team members who will be joining early in 2017 – Les Wong and Martin Kornacki.

Les Wong joins us as a partner and will head up The Digital Insurer in Europe. Les has more than 30 years’ experience in the insurance industry with insurers and brokers as both a senior executive and consultant.  Les is based in the UK. He will work closely with Rick Huckstep who is focusing his time on InsurTech research, writing and speaking engagements. Rick now takes the well-deserved honorific title of Chairman @ The Digital Insurer.

Martin Kornacki joins us as Editor and Publisher of The Digital Insurer. This new role will allow us to further accelerate the development of engaging relevant and timely content.  Martin has more than 10 years’ experience of editing and joins us from The Insurance Times (UK). Martin is also based in the UK. As a result of this new hire Malini Thakerar will take on the role of Chief Operating Officer. Find out more about the core team.

2017 – The year ahead for The Digital Insurer


Our 10 key growth objectives and plans for 2017 are:
  1. Keep the content coming: Continued focus on our core content pillars: The Library, In Action and Newswire and to deliver engaging and relevant content on the topic of digital insurance
  2. New content pillar: To build up our new thematic content pillar InsurTech Insights
  3. New website: To relaunch the website in the second quarter with a new design that increases access and engagement to content on digital insurance
  4. Globalising: To accelerate growth outside of Asia and in particular build up our team serving Europe
  5. To help tech companies: To increase the number of technology partners we are helping with content marketing and business development services
  6. Paid information services: To launch one or more information services to help insurance companies take full advantage of digital insurance insights
  7. Grow the subscriber base: To organically increase the subscriber base to more than 20,000 by the end of 2017 by word of mouth and promotion of our quality content on social media
  8. Keep our finger on the pulse of digital insurance changes:  To increase our pool of News Correspondents to more than 50 by the end of 2017
  9. To create a community of interest: To successfully run two Digital Insurer conferences in Europe and Asia and establish them as “must attend” events for those of us serious about digital insurance!
  10. To complete our global coverage: To find a partner and digital insurance thought leader for Latin America - reach out if you are interested!
