Year in Review
So it’s that time of year again when we look back and see how the previous 12 months have unfolded, and then get the crystal ball out and look to the future - both in terms of TDI’s
plans, as well a quick view on the development of digital insurance.
Industry developments – Looking back
Another busy year in the world of insurance. Everyone will have their own personal observations, these are
mine: - China is where the grown-ups go to learn about digital insurance at scale
- A clearer split in the startup InsurTech scene has developed with value chain startups gaining traction while new business models are, with one or two notable
exceptions, being led by external companies with access to consumers
- If you don’t have data and connectivity then building a new business model is going to be hard yards – however, much we’d like it be otherwise, our consumers simply don’t wake up in the morning with a burning desire to buy insurance.
Industry developments - Looking forwards
To get a diverse view, why not sign up to our webinar on January 23rd. It is a special edition where TDI and KPMG will share thoughts around the trends and topics relevant for the year
ahead.
My personal
watch list for 2018:
New business models: China Tech Co models (& expansion into SE Asia); digital first employee benefits; rise of ecosystem models with entrance of more techcos into insurance.
Value chain innovations: Omni-servicing combined with
Robotic Process Automation should fast track services improvements and further advances in personalization of services.
Tech Enablers: AI & Machine Learning.
TDI – Developments looking
back
The Top 5 highlights for 2017 at The Digital Insurer - Quality content: Our core In Action and Library series continue to build on the largest knowledgebase on digital insurance. Our sponsored China in Focus monthly blog with Swiss
Re has allowed us to offer Mandarin content and our monthly InsurTech Insights blog with KPMG provides a topic based focus for digital insurance professionals.
- Community: We have more than 20,000 email subscribers and connectivity via LinkedIn and Twitter communications channels to almost 100,000 digital insurance advocates. Our LinkedIn group has close to 12,000 members and is a great
way for people and companies to promote their digital innovations and thought leadership.
- Events: We held our first 100% digital conference with a focus on Europe with
more than 1,000 registrations and It worked well. Our second Asia conference was held in Singapore and was well received. Our webinar series with KMPG completed its second year and we have had more than 4,000 webinar attendees – review the webinar recordings
- A Team of talents: Our team has expanded to almost 20 around the world and in addition we are supported by a global network of almost 30 volunteer News Correspondents.
- Longevity:
We celebrated out 5th Anniversary in October. And we are just getting started :-). We also took the opportunity to relaunch the website with improved accessibility to the increasing volume of content.
TDI Developments – looking forward
We
have a new tagline: 'Working together to accelerate the digital transformation of insurance' which will guide our knowledge, community building and service development going forward. The guiding ethos is to provide access to, and generate quality content, that is appealing and useful to digital insurance professionals. We also wanted to explicitly recognise that success now requires collaboration and TDI intends to do as much as it can to accelerate the digital
transformation of the insurance industry.
Top 5 goals for 2018 - More quality content: Keep an eye open for the formal launch of our daily Newswire which will aggregate the best commentators and news on digital insurance around the world. We also have newsletter launches planned for the US as well as Africa. Expect more interviews with
digital thought leaders around the world. We’d like to expand into more content areas around digital insurance and sponsorship remains the primary enabler to improve the production of quality content.
- New services: We are launching our community sponsor programme in Asia in Q1 that will include a talent portal and have a number of partners comitteed as founders. In addition, we have partnered with Axco to launch an
information and analytics service to help you make faster and better informed decisions of insurtech players. Our market development services for insurance technology companies are proving particularly popular for those looking to take advantage of the high growth markets in Asia. We will be more visible in promoting these services in the year ahead
- Growing the community: We have approximately 2,000 new members a quarter
so I predict we will have approximately 30,000 email subscribers by the end of 2019. Our marketing activity will remain organic as we aim to connect with those who have a genuine long-term interest in digital insurance. Community sponsorship will also allow us to build up more informal networking sessions.
- Global & digital event: building on our Europe LiveStream event we plan to break some new ground with a Global
LIVEFEST that will celebrate successes from start-up InsurTechs as well as from the insurance industry. It is going to be innovative, exciting and best of all free to register to allow as many people to participate as possible. More news on this in early February. Our webinars will continue as well during the year
- More talent: We will continue to expand our network of volunteer News Correspondents and diversify our
thought leaders in digital insurance. So if you can spare two or more hours a month and want to publish content on digital insurance do checkout this post. Enthusiasm trumps experience so don’t feel as if you have to be super experienced to sign
up.
Thank you
Lastly thanks to our subscribers, sponsors, thought leader and TDI team for their support, feedback, contributions and readership in 2017. We hope to improve and expand in the year ahead and remain committed to quality content delivered in an
informal and accessible style that helps the insurance industry to move forwards.
Yours digitally,
Hugh Terry The Digital Insurer |
China in Focus - Chinese insurers poised to embrace blockchain
|
The latest edition of China in Focus is out now and focuses on blockchain and how insurers and InsurTechs in China are rapidly deploying new applications using the technology. InsurTechs and insurers have begun rolling out blockchain use
cases in China from settling claims, to validating identities and much more. We look at these use cases and the regulatory environment surrounding them, interview key insiders and get opinion from Swiss Re on why blockchain is more than just hype for insurance.
